As the sun began to set on a warm summer day, 12-year-old Tom sat in his bedroom staring out the window. It had been three days since he'd last seen his friend, Sarah, who lived down the street. He had been on his way to her house to play video games when he saw that the door was wide open and her bike was lying on the ground outside. He had called her name, but there had been no answer.

Tom's parents had told him not to worry, that Sarah probably just went to a friend's house without telling anyone. But Tom knew Sarah, and she wouldn't have left her bike outside like that. He had to find out what happened to her.

The next day, Tom decided to take matters into his own hands. He gathered some supplies, a flashlight, a map of the neighbourhood, and his dog, Lucky, and set out to search for Sarah. He started by visiting all of her friends' houses, but none of them had seen her. He then began to comb the streets, alleys, and parks around the neighbourhood, looking for any sign of her.

As he searched, he noticed that the adults in the neighbourhood seemed oddly reluctant to talk to him. They would quickly change the subject when he asked about Sarah or tell him that he should leave the investigation to the police. But Tom was determined to find his friend, so he continued his search.

One day, while exploring a wooded area behind the local convenience store, Tom stumbled upon a hidden path that led to an abandoned house. The house was old and dilapidated, and its windows were boarded up. But he saw a faint light coming from inside and heard a strange noise, like someone moving around.

Tom's heart raced as he cautiously entered the house. The noise grew louder, and he realized that it was coming from the basement. He carefully descended the stairs, trying to make as little noise as possible. When he reached the bottom, he saw a sight that he would never forget.

There, in the dim light of a single bulb, was Sarah, tied up and gagged. Her eyes widened with fear as she saw Tom, and she tried to scream, but the gag muffled her cries. Tom quickly untied her, and they ran out of the house as fast as they could.

They went straight to the police, who took a report and began an investigation. It was soon revealed that the kidnapper was a man who had been posing as a school counselor and had been approaching children in the neighbourhood, offering to help them with their problems. He had lured Sarah into his car and taken her to the abandoned house.

In the end, Sarah was safely returned to her family, and the kidnapper was arrested and sent to prison. Tom was hailed as a hero, but he didn't think of himself that way. He was just a kid who cared about his friend and was determined to find her.

As Tom sat in his room, looking out the window at the sunset, he knew that he had done the right thing. He had shown that even a 12-year-old could make a difference and help solve a crime. And he knew that he would always be there to help his friends, no matter what.
